Bashi expressed that she had a tough time especially with the atmosphere and learning the language German was extremely difficult. These instances made her frustrated and angry as a person. The first thing happened to her was that she saw a reflection of herself as a little girl. This became shocking to her because she thought she was going crazy but in reality it was her inner self following her around in a sense as to guide her throughout her tough moments. This aspect was interesting because it was her conscious following her around, as it seems every time she thought of something in the past or had insisted on thinking about the future, another character would appear. These characters followed her throughout her highs and lows of life during the time she was a young teenage girl into her adulthood.

Comment by Nicole: Sigmund Freud shared a very interesting theory in regards to the conscious and unconscious mind (included in link below). I feel says though here flashbacks almost showed a schizophrenic type behavior.

Life was difficult and she expressed how there were major differences between the Europeans and Iranians. She uses examples to acknowledge the lifestyle of Europeans versus Iranians. For example people being relaxed and happy in Europe where in Iran people are in turmoil. She states that she met someone along the way and talked about how close relatives and family members had to flee once again. This idea upset her because she believed it was tearing families apart. She was left with her parents a family of three because her two siblings had left to different parts of the world. She held strong belief about emigration and that people should initially stay at the place they were born in order to help the country out, others however, did not agree. She used her small sense of knowledge to express what she believed which would imply a spark that she was into politics. She truly believed her opinion no matter what others thought. Her parents were trying to convince her about leaving and having a life in Canada expect she did not agree. Although she stated in the beginning how life was during the Iran-Iraq war, she was tough and curious enough to stay behind and figure out how to approach this situation or lifestyle.

She talked about being homesick and not being able to learn the language as others around her kept asking whether she missed her life back home. She stated that the government who had imposed boundaries was difficult for her as she reminisced about her life when she saw others in Europe. She began working in an advertisement company where she met someone she was interested in. there was a difference between how her family lived who were very much liberal where the rest of the people were traditional. Being said the laws were strict such as if people had relations outside of marriage or before marriage. She explained an incident where she was walking with a classmate and they got caught by a guard where he automatically assumed they had relations began questioning them. She was insisting they were just classmates and were sent out by their professor for other purposes. Expect, the guard “caught” them in a lie and were then sent to the judge for sentencing. She could not understand why this was happening to her when she was telling the truth, she was in pain due to the lashes and had great hatred towards these actions.

Comment by Nicole: it was very difficult to read about the hard times she was having. The justice system was clearly very different than to what we are use to. I can't imagine living with the laws and regulations she had to live with. For example, the incident you mentioned above where she was only chatting with someone, something so harmless she was punished for.
I included a link of the human rights corporation in Ontario to compare the differences.

Her marriage went sort of downhill because she was unsure if her husband was the right person for her. They both had different thinking which lead to further problems. They also had a daughter. She explained that mistakes happen even in Europe where people have all the freedom where she uses examples to make her point. The only difference is that in Iran you marry the person you do not necessarily even know such as an arranged marriage. She described her lifestyle with her husband and how difficult it was. The husband took custody of the child due to once again religious reasoning. This made her extremely upset because she had a horrific marriage and yet she could not do anything about it such as prove it. Such incidents happen and occur all over the world, some places are limited to sources and a wide range of individuals suffer.

Annotation: the rise of domestic abuse among women may be a higher percentage in different parts of the world, many women face these problems and sometimes have a hard time figuring out what to do.
Comment by Nicole: I find that divorce and dissolving marriages are more common in today's society than ever before. Every one is looking for the most perfect person and sometimes look to hard and always want more and cannot be satisfied with what they currently have. Who knows how she truly felt about her marriage and her husband but when invest into someone else enough that you have a child with them it is important to work hard on the relationship. But most importantly your own happiness is crucial. A link about why marriages fail is included.

Comment by Meng: For domestic violence occurs in every country, regardless of race, regardless of nationality, this has become a topic of global concern. Many women, who for the family and the kids would rather endure domestic violence, but do not want to choose divorce, eventually leading to serious consequences. But in fact, many countries already have the appropriate protective measures and legal regulations for domestic violence. Women as the weaker in social groups, and thus we should have a self-protection awareness. This link shows women against domestic violence which called WADV,this is an online organization that seeks to provide support and information to any women or child who is or has been the victim of domestic abuse.

She described how she was miserable and yet everyone was going through the same thing. She felt that she wanted sympathy so desperately that she realized she was the only one that can help herself through this misery. She was beginning to learn from right and wrong. She is trying to make a point that it is not the fault of the religion and that we cannot blame religion based on how people are living. She went back into her past and when she studied in University of Tehran during 1985, the rules were strict and certain actions were forbidden. she worked continuously for magazines and worked on jobs inside her graphic design studio. She starred in fashion shows. She continued to think about freedom of speech while stating her opinion. This concept makes the reader think how much are we allowed to say and if so, to what extent?
