How Everyone In The Group Relates To The Memoir (theme, characters, plot):
Elida
There are several ways that I can relate to this memoir. I also came from a country that was neighbored close to another country which was about to have war. My family and I fled the country in order to have a life that would be easier for all of us. We realized that moving into another country would benefit us in many ways such as education and occupation wise. When we arrived here we changed living accommodations on a basis. Some places as I remember were harsh and some were friendlier. This reminded me of the memoir because like the author in Nylon Road she also went through a few struggles growing up and moving into a new country where she had to learn a new language and blend in with the customs. Me and my family also spoke no English which was very difficult, the people around us were very different, and we felt that we did not fit in. After some time passed we gradually blended it and began learning the new language but always reminisced about life back home.
Nicole
Nicole relates herself to the graphic memoir, Nylon Road, in relation to the fact that Bashi had a difficult time fitting in, understanding the different language when she moved. Nicole is from a very small town with little diversity and moving to Brampton to be at Sheridan was a difficult adjustment for her. It took time to find places where she felt she fit in, the right grocery stores and shopping centers that accommodated the lifestyle she was used to were difficult to find. She was forced to step out of her shell, be a little bit more outgoing and confident and approaching situations she was not exactly comfortable with. But those experiences helped her develop into a better person today.
